Depuis 2008, l’URPP réalise des études multicentriques de la surveillance de la contamination des surfaces aux antinéoplasiques en établissement de santé. Ces études ont pour objectif de faire un état de la situation chaque année et de s’assurer que la contamination demeure la plus faible possible, afin de protéger les travailleurs des établissements de santé.

51 hôpitaux canadiens ont participé à la dernière étude réalisée en 2014. Nous observons que la concentration des traces de cyclophosphamide sur les surfaces diminue avec les années. Les concentrations d’ifosfamide et de méthotrexate demeurent faibles.

Dans le cadre de nos études, nous recommandons aux centres participants de cibler leurs actions correctrices en priorité sur les sites dont les concentrations sont plus élevées que la valeur cible correspondant au 75e percentile de tous les hôpitaux participants.

De plus, nous avons observé que la proportion de sites présentant des traces d’antinéoplasiques demeure constante, soit environ 50% des sites pour le cyclophosphamide, environ 20% pour l’ifosfamide et environ 10% pour le méthotrexate. Les sites les plus fréquemment contaminés étaient la grille de la hotte et le plancher devant la hotte dans la pharmacie, et les bras de chaise et les comptoirs dans les cliniques externes. Il est important de poursuivre nos efforts afin de limiter la contamination.

Since 2008, the Pharmacy Practice Research Unit has been conducting multicenter studies on the surface contamination with antineoplastics in healthcare centers. The objective of these studies is to capture the annual level of contamination, and to make sure that the contamination level remains as low as reasonably achievable in order to protect healthcare workers.

51 canadian hospitals participated in the last study that was conducted in 2014. We found that the concentration of cyclophosphamide on surfaces has been reduced over the years. Concentrations of ifosfamide and methotrexate remained low.

In our studies, we recommend to participating centers that they target their corrective measures in priority to the sites with concentrations higher than the target value, which corresponds to the 75th percentile of the contamination measured from all hospitals.

In addition, we found that the proportion of sampling sites with traces of antineoplastic remains constant, corresponding to about 50% of positive sites for cyclophosphamide, about 20% for ifosfamide, and about 10% for methotrexate. The most frequently contaminated sites were the front grille of the hood and the floor in front of the hood in the pharmacy, and the arm rest and the counters in the outpatient clinic. It is important to maintain our efforts in order to limit the level of surface contamination.
